Burnt Rose #1-9

30:00 / live performance + painting / 2020 / USA

Place: Washington Street Art, Somerville, MA
Media: digital projection/digital sound/ 16mm film/guitar/sine tones/molcajete
Painting #1-9 (water ink on paper, rose pigment)/soft brick #1-9 (rose pigment, carving on paper, tile, framed)

It is a work of material variability involving floral pigments, handmade paper, ground materials, and vibrations of light, image, and sound. The nine stages of the performance arose from the rose’s organic behavior under a range of heating and drying conditions.

What color is a rose? Even a rose has many colors. For example, we learned that red comes from anthocyanins and yellow comes from carotenoids. I wanted to know what colors a rose, or a specific bunch of roses, would develop when heated and baked to different degrees. The resulting pigments were ground into watercolors and painted onto paper according to the results of nine stages of experimentation, forming the core structure of this work.

Images transition from paper to film. In the beams of light, celluloid, too, can burn, even in the most quiet moments. The flowers reborn from indeterminacy shine in the darkness, but only for a moment. As soon as it appears, it disappears.

Music performed by Michael Pisaro-Liu.
